We’re Lizana de Jongh and Gené Strauss — two passionate West Coast, ZA permaculturists on a mission to live more sustainably, design more intentionally, and connect more deeply with the land around us.

​

Together, we’re reimagining our gardens and lifestyles from the ground up — literally — in two very different yet equally inspiring river-based ecologies on the West Coast of South Africa.

​

From dense clay to sandy fynbos, salt-swept shorelines to inland microclimates, our Zone 2 environment challenges us to listen, adapt, and observe constantly.

Our shared vision for Soil-to-Soul:

Soil-to-Soul is founded on the understanding that the health of our landscapes reflects the 
health of our inner world.

 

By regenerating soil, restoring biodiversity and cultivating human potential, we create thriving ecosystems—both within ourselves and in the environments we steward.

Through education, ecological design and collaborative partnerships, Soil-to-Soul develops 
practical solutions that restore ecosystems while creating projects that are financially 
sustainable and socially meaningful.

An open, welcoming platform to explore whole systems design, build community resilience, and share permaculture knowledge—both locally and internationally.

 

Whether you're just getting started or already knee-deep in compost, this is for you.

• Signing up for the Soil-to-Soul Garden Club

• Attend the club's FREE learning circles, held one Saturday every month (contact us to confirm which Saturday)  and hosted at Bokmakierie nursery or other local inspiring sites.  Bring your notebook and enthusiasm!

• Book a hands-on workshop (at our venue or yours)

• Join one of our topic-specific learning days at Bokmakierie to support your personal sustainable garden design journey.

• We will soon be launching Bokmakierie's Permaculture Learning centre  (September 2026), which will offer interactive educational programs suitable for all ages and skill levels.
